6-Week Abortion Ban Goes into Effect May 1, 2024:

As of May 1, 2024. abortion care is legal in Florida only through 6 weeks. The law banning abortion after 6 weeks has legal exceptions for the life of the patient, physical health of the patient, and lethal fetal anomaly. Legal exceptions for rape and human trafficking are also included in the law, however, official documentation is required.

Floridians can still get safe abortions. They can order abortion pills from medical providers out of state who can prescribe safe & effective medication abortion pills via telehealth through websites like INeedAnA.com and PlanCPills.com, or they can travel out of state for abortion care in Puerto Rico, D.C., Colorado, and most of the Northeast. Even if a person is not sure how far along their pregnancy is, navigators at abortion clinics can help them figure out their options. Our Resources page has more information on Broward clinics and other options.

BWEF Background & Vision

Founded in August 2003, the Broward Women’s Emergency Fund (BWEF) believes that the right to choose abortion is meaningless without access to safe, legal abortion services. We oppose all efforts to restrict abortion rights and are committed to fighting for access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare, including abortion care, for all women, girls and pregnant folks, regardless of income, race, age, disability, gender identity or immigration status.

Where Will My Donation Go?

On May 1, 2024, a ban on abortion care at 6 weeks – before most people even know that they are pregnant – went into effect in Florida. At a time when our reproductive rights are increasingly under attack by anti-abortion ideologues in Washington DC, Tallahassee and across the country, your support is needed now more than ever.

Other than some very basic administrative costs, your contribution will go directly to the women who need it; BWEF members contribute their time.

We provide small grants through the clinics we work with to help people cover the cost of surgical or medication abortion.

Because of all the barriers, especially the laws passed by the FL legislature to criminalize abortion care, getting an abortion can cost thousands of dollars in travel, lodging, childcare, lost wages, and medical care.

Your contribution will provide direct financial assistance to people seeking abortion care who need help covering the costs.
